State of the Map, 2011

SOTM 2011 was fantastic. For those of you who don’t know, the OpenStreetMap project aims to build the best, most complete map of the world — freely available, and built by volunteers using a crowdsourcing approach. I presented a talk on how we are using OSM data for our Airborne Law Enforcement systems, and was pleased to attend a number of other presentations of outstanding quality.

2011 ALEA Show

The Airborne Law Enforcement Association convention was held in New Orleans, LA this year. As always, it was a pleasure making new friends and catching up with old ones. Next year, ALEA will be held in Reno, Nevada from July 11-14 and promises to be a great one.

2011 Paris Air Show

Attending the Paris Air Show for the first time was everything we had hoped it would be — great meetings, great aircraft, and great people. Diamond Airborne Sensing demonstrated their outstanding DA-42 MPP aircraft equipped with a Cineflex V14 HD and running ARS with a live broadcast to their chalet via satellite. A special “Thank You” to everyone who took time to meet with us — we really appreciate it!

Alberta Fires

There are more wildfires burning in Alberta now than at any time in the last 50 years. One of our engineers flew up to Fort McMurray to join a partner operating one of the 29 helicopters fighting the fires.

Accepting the Auggie at ARE 2011

Called the “Oscar” of Augmented Reality, we are honored to have won the second annual “Auggie” competition on May 17 for the best Augmented Reality Demo at the 2011 Augmented Reality Event — especially in light of the all of the other fantastic presentations. It was a great show, and a big “Thank You” to those to organized the event. Tim Wut wrote a great recap of the show.

On the left side of the Atlantic, we attended the Full Motion Video for Defense conference in Washington, DC — and on the right side, we’ve been attending HOSDB in Farnborough. Both have been great, and we always learn a lot from our interactions with those of you who visit us. A special “Thank You” to General Heithold, who mentioned our work in his keynote presentation. We look forward to continuing the many conversations we had with all of you.

Technology Demonstrator 3 News Coverage

We mentioned our participation in the TD3-AR trials sponsored by the UK Home Office earlier. The showcase event was held on the 9th of February at the Honorable Artillery Company in London, and was a first-class event in every way. Well attended by stakeholders and the press, Logica did an outstanding job organizing the event and ensuring it’s success. We were especially honored by the opportunity to meet Baroness Neville-Jones, the Minister of State for Security and Counter Terrorism, and delighted by the fact that the show received national television coverage.
